How can I protect my or my customer's shrubs in the winter? The use of a tree wrap can protect plants against wind damage. Mulch helps protect perennial flower beds as long as you use it properly, don't overdo it! Here are a few suggestions of what you might do before the snow starts to fall. Professional burlap tree wraps can be used. Wrap the burlap around the shrubs or trees so branches are pulled closer to the trunk or center. This will give support to branches so they won't snap due to ice or snow build up. Then there is the "cage" style built around the shrub, forming a rectangle. Attach chicken wire to 4 poles stretching it from pole to pole. Once you've completed building the structure, affix burlap to all sides. The burlap will reduce the shrub's exposure to drying winds. Protecting evergreens from the wind can minimize the moisture loss and help save them from "winterburn". You can also build a shelter made of wood to protect your plantings. An "A" frame style shelter will work, however, you may not like the look for the entire winter.
